Flt Lt Mark “Speed” Fallon RAAF Base Amberley, December 1986

“The Inquiry found no definitive cause(s). A Reenactment of the exact flight parameters by other F-111 crews could not replicate the angle of attack and other distinctive flight variables involved that resulted in A8-128’s impact with the ground. It is commonly thought within the RAAF F-111 community that the altimeter was incorrectly set (unofficially) and that the crew was actually closer to the ground than the instruments had portrayed. When the TFR engaged an Auto pull-up due to ground proximity, the momentum and inertia of the Aircraft / "Pig" carried them into the ground at 600knots. The actual mock bombing run maneuver they were performing is no longer carried out by the RAAF, deemed too dangerous! Coroner's report indicated the pilot was flying hands-off as TFR was engaged. There were no injuries consistent with having hands-on contact with the flight column at the time of ground impact.”
