"19
years old" Youngest RAAF F-111 crew |
Nellis AFB 1984 October
/ September |
| In 1982, Speed Fallon became the youngest pilot to command the supersonic F-111 at the young age of 19. After 2 years at 1SQN, he was posted to and completed flying instructors course,(East Sale,Victoria) before instructing at 1FTS (Point Cook, Melbourne). In 1986 he was posted back to AMB to 6SQN as an F-111Operational Conversion Course Instructor, and was responsible for ground and flight instruction of prospective F-111 pilots and navigators. - Also view the memorial page. |
| "The Inquiry found no definitive
cause(s). A Reenactment of the exact flight parameters by other F-111
crews could not replicate the angle of attack and other distinctive
flight variables involved that resulted in A8-128's impact with the
ground. It is commonly thought within the RAAF F-111 community that
the altimeter was incorrectly set (unofficially) and that the crew was
actually closer to the ground than the instruments had portrayed. When
the TFR engaged an Auto pull-up due to ground proximity, the momentum
and inertia of the Aircraft / "Pig" carried them into the
ground at 600knots. The actual mock bombing run maneuver they were performing
is no longer carried out by the RAAF, deemed too dangerous! Coroner's
report indicated the pilot was flying hands-off as TFR was engaged.
There were no injuries consistent with having hands-on contact with
the flight column at the time of ground impact."
