| Another F-111 legend has flown into
eternity. Lt Col Alexander A. (Sandy) Marquardt died peacefully at
the age of 73 on 22 Aug 2006 at his mountain retreat home in Cuchara,
Colorado. Upon being selected for the Harvest Reaper/Combat Lancer
program, Sandy was one of the first F-111 pilots to experience combat
in the F-111. On 30 Mar 1968 a flight control problem forced Sandy
and his PWSO, Capt Joe Hodges, to eject from their F-111A near the
Laos/Thailand border. They were successfully rescued and continued
to fly combat missions over North Vietnam.
Sandy returned to Takhli AB, Thailand with the Constant Guard deployment of the F-111A in Sep 1972, again flying combat missions over Laos and North Vietnam and a third combat tour found him flying the F-111 in Line Backer II. Sandy was born in Evanston, Illinois
and graduated from Northwestern University where his extracurricular
activities included head cheerleader and song and dance routines
in musical shows. He retired from the Air Force in 1978 after 20
years of decorated service. Following retirement Sandy worked for
General Dynamics for several years as a flight consultant. |
At home
as his family & friends will remember him |
