On the evening of 13 September 1993, F-111C A8-127 crewed by FLTLTs Jeremy McNess and Mark Cairns-Cowan of 1SQN, crashed in a field four kilometers west of the township of Guyra during a simulated weapons delivery tactic.  The crash came as a servere shock to the Australian F-111 community which had gone for more than six years since the previous crash, that of FLTLT Mark Fallon and FLGOFF William Pike in A8-128 near the town of Tenterfield a short distance to the north.

A memorial service and dedication of two plaques, one at the Guyra Shire Council Offices, and the other at the actual crash site was held on 16/17 May 2000. The crash site memorial is beneath a large gum tree in a cleared grazing paddock off Neewarra Road.  No wreckage remains on site. The memorials were organised by the Guyra Shire Council, who also hosted family and friends of Jez and CC.  The RAAF provided a honour guard and F-111 Flypast for the dedication.
