Jim's
F-111 back ground, I served 20 years in the USAF, including
10 associated with the F-111. I trained in F-111Ds at Cannon AFB,
NM in late 1981 and was then transferred to RAF Lakenheath where
I remained until late 1987. While at Lakenheath, I became Chief
of Wing Radar Strike and was responsible for the overall planning
of the wing's training missions for about 3 years. During this time,
I also served as the liaison between the operators and the engineers
who developed the aircraft and mission data loading software. Working
together, we were able to make a lot of major capability improvements
to the F-111F software. After finishing my tour at Lakenheath, I
was transferred back to Cannon AFB for three years flying the F-111D
was and immediately put to work doing the same things I had been
doing at Lakenheath (including updating the aircraft software).
I also oversaw the mission planning preparations for Cannon's extremely
successful 1988 participation in SAC's Giant Voice bombing competition,
where we almost walked off with the grand prize. During my ten years
of involvement with the Vark, when I wasn't planning missions for
others to fly, I managed to squeeze in over 1,000 hours of my own
flight time.
